Radcliffe-on-Trent, Notts.
Mature trees in Rockley Memorial Gardens, Park Road. Park Road is off Shelford Road (i.e. the road between Radcliffe and Shelford). The gardens were gifted to the town's inhabitants by Mr Lisle Rockley in memory of his son who was killed during WWI. Several plaques on the rear wall of this rain shelter provide details of the locations of trees and shrubs; recognition of the four gardeners who have tended this oasis since 1927 and a memorial plaque referring to the death of Lt. Wm. Lisle Rockley and his comrades who fell at Ypres. There are also two entrance/exit gates (ahead) onto a nearby cliff-top path overlooking the River Trent.

This memorial garden - Rockley Memorial Park - and a parallel cliff-top path overlooking the River Trent (behind these benches and trees) was gifted to the town's inhabitants by Mr Lisle Rockley in memory of his son who was killed at Ypres during WWI. The park was opened in 1927. In addition to two access gates from the cliff-top path, this garden can also be accessed from nearby Park Road, off Shelford Road (i.e. the Radcliffe-Shelford road).

Wollemi nobilis pine in Rockley Memorial Park
"This tree existed 200 million years ago and was thought to be extinct with only fossil records remaining, until its discovery in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. Only 100 were found, and cuttings were taken and propagated." (Plaque by Radcliffe on Trent Parish Council, Jan 2008)

Radcliffe-on-Trent, Notts.
Behind these newly erected wooden railings (2012/2013) heavily wooded shale cliffs drop down towards the River Trent. This cliff-top path, designated The Avenue at this point, extends from Radcliffe towards Gibbet Hill (ahead). The path continues, in both direction, along a 15-20 foot wide strip of open land. This public walk, together with Rockley Memorial Park - an entrance gate to which is seen here - was gifted to the town's inhabitants in 1927 by Mr Lisle Rockley in memory of his son, who was killed at Ypres during WWI. This flower-garden type park can equally be accessed from Park Road, off Shelford Road, (i.e. the B Class road between Radcliffe and Shelford).

This part of the cliff-top path (the Trent Valley Path) is accessible from Granfield Crescent, off Shelford Road (i.e. the route between Radcliffe and Shelford). The path hugs the edge of the top of a 15-20 foot wide strip of open land situated on the top of long length of shale cliffs overlooking the River Trent (beyond the fence). This cliff-top walk and Rockley Memorial Park (behind the photographer), was given to the town's inhabitants by Mr Lisle Rockley in memory of his son, who was killed at Ypres during WWI. Radcliffe railway station and the town centre lie a 10 minute walk ahead.

The Avenue
The pathway, also carrying the Trent Valley Way, along the top of the cliffs above the River Trent at Radcliffe on Trent. There are a number of memorial benches along here but frustratingly the views are almost entirely of the trees which grow on the cliffs, rather than views across the River Trent.
