The Beacon, a closed pub in Lawe Top, South Shields
On passing this pub under refurbishment I was much amused to notice that someone has graffitied in the name ' Basil Fawlty' where the name of the licensee is usually displayed. It could be an in-joke (or even an inn joke?) or a local joke or just a general joke, but it was funny.

'Hand' by David Gross (1998) off River Drive
The wood and steel sculpture was designed in collaboration with pupils from St Peter and St Paul’s Roman Catholic Primary School with wood reclaimed from demolition of a shipyard. Within the wooden hand is a steel propeller. The sculpture stands in the grounds of an engineering works. View is from Green's Place on the heights of The Lawe looking across the Tyne Narrows towards North Shields Fish Quay and Low Light.

The Lawe Beacons, South Shields
Erected as navigational aids in 1832 by John Turnbull at a cost of £60, replacing C18th structures. They complement the High and Low Lights at North Shields. Alignment of the two beacons, shown by a connecting line of cobbles between the two pillars, enabled ships to avoid the dangerous sand bars that were a constant navigation problem at the entrance to the River estuary.
