The design concept for smart cars began in the late 1980s, associated at the time with the Swatch brand of watches. Smart Automobile is a branch of Daimler AG that specialises in manufacturing microcars. On the left can be seen the Tyne Rowing Club Image with their steps down to the river. The Boathouse pub is on the right Image with the Newburn Hotel just to its left. The Grange Road side of the Newburn Hotel taken from the path at the rear of Image close to the site of the former Newburn Railway Station. Boathouse of Tyne Rowing Club
Rowing is a popular sport on the River Tyne. Adjacent to Hadrian's Way, a path from Wylam to Newcastle along the north bank of the Tyne which carries both Hadrian's Cycleway http://www.cycle-routes.org/HADRIANSCYCLEWAY/and Hadrian's Wall National Trail http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/hadrianswall/. In the distance is the "Boatman" public house.

Tyne Rowing Club, Newburn Riverside
The club was founded in 1852 and is amongst the oldest sporting clubs in England. The building here is the club's third boathouse and was opened on the 6th April 1957 by Viscount Runciman http://www.tynerowingclub.org/pages/history_16403.cfm The beard of the Tyne River God (on the front wall) symbolises the joining of the South and North Tyne Rivers.
