Caledonian Road and Barnsbury Station
On the North London Line. Station improvements have been made here since the line was taken over by Transport for London. This line also has heavy freight traffic as this is a convenient link between most of the main lines into London north of the Thames. The freight tracks can be seen to the right, with overhead electric wires. On this section the North London Line still uses a third rail for current collection.

London Transport's North London line is subject to an ongoing programme of modernisation, and following a period of closure, the Gospel Oak to Stratford section reopened on 1 June 2010. At Caledonian Road & Barnsbury, the former westbound Platform 1 is now out of use for trains; Platform 2, previously used for eastbound trains, is now the westbound platform, and the other side of this island platform has become Platform 3, for eastbound trains. A new footbridge with lifts has been installed.

Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station on a wet November afternoon
The line through here was opened between 1850 and 1852 as the East & West India Docks & Birmingham Junction Railway. It was renamed the North London Railway in 1853. This gave a link from the Euston main line near Primrose Hill to the docks at Poplar via Bow. A station called Caledonian Road was opened in 1852 and existed until 1870 when Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station was opened as "Barnsbury" a little further east than the previous station. Barnsbury was renamed "Caledonian Road & Barnsbury" in 1893.
The line was electrified in 1916. All trains serving the station are now operated by London Overground, as well as frequent freight trains passing through. This view is from the eastbound platform looking in the direction of Stratford. The line to the left is for freight. A westbound Overground train has pulled up at the opposite platform.
