The Capital Ring passing through Cherry Tree Wood
Cherry Tree Wood was once part of the Bishop of London's great Hornsey Park. On some old maps it is referred to as Dirthouse Wood, apparently because the nearby White Lion public house was frequented by carters bringing out night soil from London for manure, and taking hay back for the city's horses. Today the park consists of an inner, more formal area of traditional lawn, with a playground, tea kiosk and tennis courts, surrounded by an outer more natural area, which is the surviving ancient woodland. The Capital Ring crosses Cherry Tree Wood, via the path seen on the left here, between East Finchley station and Highgate Wood.
