The Lure of The Underground
A prospective passenger enters the relative warmth and dry that the station offers on a very wet February afternoon. The name of the photo is taken from a famous 1927 poster by Alfred Leete for the Underground Electric Railway Company, copies of which can be obtained from the London Transport Museum - see http://www.ltmuseumshop.co.uk/LTM/Posters/Artists/Product/The-lure-of-the-Underground.html . With weather like this who wouldn't want to go Underground?

Public Road Transport at East Finchley Station
Buses on the 263 and 102 routes wait in the queue of traffic beside the station while a taxi stands on the forecourt. The traffic jam has been caused by the temporary lights up the hill at the junction of High Road and Fortis Green

Passing East Finchley Station
A 263 bus heading for Holloway passes the pedestrian crossing by East Finchley Station - the roundel of which is visible behind. The buildings behind are, on the left, McDonald's UK headquarters and, on the right, The Institute. The institute also has buildings behind the station and provides a wide range of adult education courses.

Planned Disruption
As work on the Crossrail project continues, the time has come to close Tottenham Court Road station on the Northern Line. A poster outside East Finchley station warns of disruption as an early morning commuter hurries to catch his train, having bought his paper.

Rail Gap Indicator and Train Stop
Located at the southbound end of the centre roads through East Finchley Station, the rail gap indicator is there to show if the next section of track has power. If it has been powered down to allow maintenance the indicator will show three red lights. If illuminated it represents a stop signal.
In front of the indicator is a train stop. This is not related to the rail gap indicator, but to the normal signal for the line and is designed to operate a trip-cock on the train to automatically apply the brakes should the train attempt to pass the signal when it is red.
It looks like the weedkilling train has not been up the line to the depot recently as the ballast has been colonised by Yellow Corydalis (Corydalis lutea) and Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum), though why they appear to prefer different section of the track is a bit of a mystery.

Depot only
A damp and misty view along the original GNR Northern Heights tracks from East Finchley station. These used to route through to Finsbury Park but now form a truncated branch to the Northern line depot at Highgate. Photos of disused stations on the old route may be found at
