Odd One Out
Sited between the large semi-detached houses on Long Lane is this unique house. A number of local myths surround its design. Was it built as a station masters house for a station half way between East Finchley and Finchley Central? - unlikely, it uses the wrong type of brick for a Great Northern Railway building. Or was it built as a vicarage - if so, for which church? Perhaps it was a lodge for the manor - located on East End Road at the junction with Manor View. Nobody seems to know for certain.

Long Lane N2
Recently resurfaced, the Lane appears quiet in this mid-morning shot. However, this gentle bend is often the scene of accidents (see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/193287 for example) as drivers travel too fast for the road conditions. The terraced houses all had peaks over the bay windows when built but as each has been re-roofed over the years some of the peaks have been lost.

Long Lane N2 - Accident
Aftermath of an accident in Long Lane. A speeding Vauxhall Omega struck this Saxo, spinning it round and dumping it on the pavement. Part of the wall was demolished in the process. Fortunately no pedestrians were passing at the time. The Omega was abandoned further down the Lane opposite Abingdon Road. It was the second accident on this corner inside a month. The gentle nature of the corner can be seen at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/193285

Urban Forestry
A nice collection of off road vehicles parked on the drive of a house on Long Lane while a Lawson's Cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsonia) is removed from a garden on Brighton Road. There were 2 of these trees and both were removed in little more than an hour. The tractor is a John Deere 6920S. The vehicle hiding behind the tractor is a Unimog.

Pollarding a Plane
One of Long Lane's Plane trees gets a haircut. The branches that are removed are shredded and used for garden and wood products. This tree finally succumbed to decay, you can see the split in the bark just above the green car, and was chopped down in June 2008.
