Wood Green Crown Court - the rear
The extraordinary structure looming over its surroundings is about the last thing that comes to mind - a crown court. Its front, or at least the lower part, is in a completely different style - Image

Wood Green Crown Court
Built in 1865 as a home for the sons of deceased and needy Freemasons, it was converted to a Training College for Schoolmistresses in 1904. In 1930 it was sold to the Tottenham District Gas Company and later became the offices of Eastern Gas until 1974 when the site was acquired by Haringey Council under whom the building was modernised and became the Wood Green Crown Court and Remand Centre with the rest of the site developed for housing. The building was struck by arson c1989 and promptly rebuilt with a new and very assertive roof. Text adapted from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lordship_Lane_%28Haringey%29

Bowes Park Telephone Exchange (2)
This TE located in Lordship Lane has a splendid appearance about it with its windows and vertical drainpipes. It is unfortunate therefore that the ornate middle entrance is no longer in use, the new entrance being to the left of it. This TE now has 0208-881, 888 and 889 xxxx numbers, having had BOWes Park and MULberry numbers until the late 1960s. The extension behind the TE can be seen to the right of the photo.

Bowes Park Telephone Exchange (1)
Located at 661 Lordship Lane N22 5LA, this TE would appear to date from the 1930s, a building that the art historian Nikolaus Pevsner would have approved of. It has the code LNBPK and provides telephone and broadband services to 23,227 residential and 1,012 non-residential premises in Bowes Park and Wood Green. Until the late 1960s, it used to have BOWes Park and MULberry numbers. The ornate entrance would appear to be no longer used, the present entrance being to the left of it having originally had window panes like the other three front ones.
