New River College, White Lion Street, Islington (1)
This handsome building was formerly White Lion Street School. It is now run by the London Borough of Islington as a Key Stage 4 college and youth centre. This view is looking east along White Lion Street. The college takes its name from the New River, a seventeenth-century artificial 'river' which carried drinking water 20 miles from the River Lee and Amwell Springs in Hertfordshire to reservoirs in Islington. One of these reservoirs stands in nearby Claremont Square and is still in use by Thames Water.
