Tipping in Harbet Road
Harbet Road in Edmonton is not the sort of road one would normally want to walk down. Much of it is derelict with buildings in various stages of being demolished and the main activity seems to be skip hire, and the dumping and sorting of the contents of the skips. This particular heap of rubbish had various diggers working on it at what looked like impossible angles.

The River Lea Flood Relief Channel
Work started on the River Lea Flood Relief Channel in 1947 following major flooding and it was fully operational by 1976. It is seen here from the slip road of the North Circular Road at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5347537 More detail about the River Lea Flood Relief Channel can be seen at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Lee_Flood_Relief_Channel

River Lea seen from the North Circular Road
The original River Lea flowed 70 miles from Leagrove Marsh near Luton to the River Thames at Bow Creek. The River Lee Act of 1766 provided for the construction of 15 new cuts to straighten the course of the river by eliminating loops which made it difficult to navigate. The River Lee Navigation just west of here is one of those cuts and hence it is a navigation rather than a river. This though is the River Lea, seen here from the slip road of the North Circular Road at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5347537 Unlike the Lee Navigation it is not accessible here. Historically the river is spelled Lea while the navigation is Lee.

River Lee Diversion near South Chingford
The River Lee (or Lea) used to slowly meander through this area, but in order to better control the flow of water, and to provide space for the various reservoirs down this part of the Lee valley, this long broad concrete conduit was built, probably between the two World Wars. This is the view looking north from the Harbet Road bridge. The boundary between the London Boroughs of Enfield to the left, and Waltham Forest to the right, passes down the centre of the river.
