The route was continued on to Lower Edmonton on 22nd July 1872 and to Edmonton Junction on 1st August 1872. The Railway Tavern (2) - sign, 65 White Hart Lane, Tottenham, London N17
The fading sign of the closed Railway Tavern. The name is because it is nearby to White City Lane Railway Station. The brewers Charles Wells, of Bedford, still exist but they are now Wells & Young's following a merger. The locomotive on the sign appears to be a painting of Great Western Railway Star class 4-6-0 locomotive no. 4038 "Queen Berengaria". It was built at Swindon in 1911 to a design by G J Churchward, and withdrawn in April 1952. A similar locomotive no. 4003 Lode Star survives at the National Railway Museum in York. Queen Berengaria was the wife of King Richard I the Lionheart. It would be interesting to know what was depicted on the previous sign as the pub is much older than the loco! Image

The Railway Tavern (1), 65 White Hart Lane, Tottenham, London N17
This rather splendid looking public house has been closed for some time. It is on the corner of White Hart Lane and Penshurst Road. It was a fairly big pub with several pool tables and was very popular on football match days, being not far from the Tottenham Hotspurs ground, and virtually next door to White Hart Lane Railway Station. The pub has been around a long time. It is mentioned in the Middlesex Post Office Directory of 1874, but could be even earlier. Image

Opened in 1872 by the Great Eastern Railway on its line from London Liverpool Street to Broxbourne. View north towards Silver Street and Broxbourne, some 7 years before a new station building altered this view. See Image for a 2022 view from a similar camera position.
