Detail from ?The Streets They Left Behind' project in Canonbury Road
This rather touching little memorial has been placed on the road sign for Canonbury Road by the London Borough of Islington with Lottery funding. It commemorates the men from the street who lost their lives in the First World War and was put up on the occasion of the centenary of the start of the War. Its place on the road sign can be seen at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4261270 An interactive map of where each person in Islington who died once lived can be found at http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=2cb7d264996b45a6bc655c34ada3f798&extent=-0.114,51.5303,-0.0981,51.5355 I have only ever seen soldiers killed by individual streets and that was in St Albans - see https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/7203162

The "New River" east of Canonbury Road
The New River http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_River_(England) originally ran through what is now a "linear park" between Canonbury Road and St. Paul's Road; this section is now artificially maintained with water. [The New River itself currently ends in Stoke Newington.]
