The Turrets, Friern Barnet Road, London N11
Originally the Railway Tavern, the Turrets was built in 1887. In the late 1960s/1970s it was a popular social venue with a function room where discos and folk singing evenings were held. Latterly it became Kites Nightclub. It has been boarded up for years. Apparently it is a listed building, so watch this space.

The Turrets, Friern Barnet Road, London N11
Originally the Railway Hotel, which was opened in 1856, it was re-built in 1887. I am not sure when it was re-named "The Turrets", but it was still the Railway Hotel in the early 1900s. In the late 1960s/early 1970s it was a popular social venue with a function room where discos and folk singing evenings were held. Latterly it became Kites Nightclub. It has been boarded up for several years. Apparently it is a listed building, so presumably the facade would need to be kept if it were redeveloped. See link to how the pub looked before the turreted extensions were added, probably in the late 1880s. https://www.flickr.com/photos/59035330@N05/8059900015/

A major accident on the ECML near New Southgate
View northward, towards Hitchin etc. on the ex-Great Northern ECML from King's Cross. The overnight express (21.50 from Aberdeen) had derailed, with this result - for more detail see Image This was the scene later in the day as the coaches were being re-railed.

Locomotive humbled after serious derailment at New Southgate
View eastward, across the East Coast Main Line just north of New Southgate Station. [See my 'Triumph and Beyond: the East Coast Main Line, 1939 - 1959, Part 1', Challenger, 1998]. Owing to poor maintenance of the track after the War, the overnight 19.50 Edinburgh - King's Cross derailed at 70 mph north of New Southgate station. The engine became detached from the train and slid along 100 yards. The fireman was killed and the driver injured, but the passengers were relatively unscathed. The locomotive is A2/1 Pacific 60508 'Duke of Rothesay' and the driver was the celebrated Bill Hoole. (See also Adrian Gray 'East Coast Main Line Disasters', Pendragon Publication 2013).
