Statue of Jonah's Wife at Turvey
There are two statues on the island overlooked by Turvey bridge. This statue is known as Jonah's Wife. The headless female torso was discovered in a nearby barn and erected in 1953 by the then owner of Turvey Mill (shown in another view within this square and which includes Jonah himself). For some unknown reason a bearded male head was added to the torso - some wife, but she is Grade II listed!

Statue of Jonah at Turvey
This statue, known as Jonah, is one of two on the small island that can be seen from the south side of Turvey Bridge - see also Jonah's wife in this square. Jonah is a semi-naked male with a dolphin at his feet, 10ft tall and Grade II listed. Apparently he came from the monastery of the Bonhommes founded at Ashridge and was erected on this site by John Higgins, a worthy of nearby Turvey Abbey.

Turvey Mill on the River Great Ouse
In 1885 John Battams who was a third generation miller of the famous Whitworth family built a new mill here at Turvey alongside an earlier stone driven water mill. The mill burned down a few years later but was replaced. The competitive success of the mill convinced him to set up another new mill at the well-known landmark site of Whitworths on the River Nene at Wellingborough. The mill here at Turvey was working as late as 1947. Also visible in this photo is the statue of Jonah - see other views in this square.

Turvey Bridge
Looking upstream from the Buckinghamshire bank towards the ancient bridge which still carries the A428 trunk road between Bedford and Northampton. The Great Ouse here forms the boundary between the historic counties of Buckingham and Bedford, and now separates the unitary authorities of Milton Keynes and Bedford Borough.
