Cooling Street, with the old 'Staff of Life'
Looking north along Cooling Street from near the junction with Perry Hill. The railway bridge can be seen in the distance. The red-brick building is now a private residence, by the name of Satis House - but I seem to remember that about 30 years ago it was a pub (with frosted-glass windows), under the unlikely name of 'The Staff of Life'. Whether that was its original name, I just don't know.

Satis House, Cooling Street
It is unlikely that Great Expectations took the name Satis House from this house at Cooling Street, but more likely that the house took inspiration from the novel as this is very much 'Dickens country'.

Lambs at Cooling Street
At their friskiest. Hard to believe, in early March, that lambs and ewes are the same species !

Wild flowers in the road verge at Cooling Street
Poppies and mallow are prominent amongst other wild flowers in this colourful road verge on Cooling Street, just north of the hamlet of Cooling Street. Just ahead is a bridge carrying the freight line which crosses the Hoo Peninsula. This single track railway line runs from Hoo Junction to Thamesport. Passenger services ran on the line from 1882 to 1961. The line is still used for freight and a long train of containers can occasionally be seen trundling across the Isle of Grain to join the main line between Higham and Gravesend.
