Fort Clarence, Rochester
Fort Clarence was built in 1812 as a defence against a possible Napoleonic attack from the nearby River Medway below. 'The Buildings of England - West Kent & The Weald' describes it as a "massive stock-brick tower with round angle turrets, and immense, stylised machicoulis [= an opening between the corbels of a projecting parapet or in the floor of a gallery or roof of a portal for discharging missiles upon assailants below of stone over the gateway] to the N". The latter can be seen in this view of the north elevation of the building, now apparently converted into flats.

Fort Clarence, Rochester
On junction of St Margarets Street and gun Tower Mews.
Former military fort. Was part of the Medway group of Forts (Fort Luton, Amherst, Borstal and Horsted). Now converted into a large private house. Very good conversion keeping most of the forts brickwork. Land to rear of fort now used by Rochester Territorial Army Centre.
For more details on history see http://www.borstal.org.uk/history/fort_clarence.shtml

Fort Clarence gun tower
On St Margaret's Street. On the other side of the street exactly opposite the tower is a deep man-made defile. This seems to have been dug so guns could be trained down to the near Medway bank without the brow of the hill getting in the way.
