"Pablo Bee-Casso"
Part of the Bee in the City project and typical of the excruciating puns which the project has spawned. This sculpture is sponsored by Pinsent Masons LLP and sited in Crown Square, Spinningfields. The artist Jenny Leonard thought the 3-D sculpture would lend itself really well to the cubism movement and Pablo Picasso’s stylised work. Using the shapes of the model to dictate the faces and pieces, she has curved and bent Picasso’s most famous paintings around the surface of the Bee to create a fun visual pun and a recognisable, distinctive style of artwork.

Crown Court, Crown Square, Manchester
The far building of Portland stone with windows divided by vertical mullions and entrance with a wavy canopy is by L.C. Howitt, 1957-62. To the fore is a little of the extension by the Property Services Agency, c1986. It is rather more brutal. Pevsner considers it all a "come-down" from Alfred Waterhouse's original buildings, destroyed in the Blitz.

Byrom Street and Crown Square
From Quay Street. The telephoto foreshortening makes everything appear nearer than it really is: the most distant of the multi-storey blocks is (the Tax Office) on Bridge Street. The trees are in Crown Square, in front of the Courthouse.

Hardman Square, Manchester
Part of a large development, 'Spinningfields', begun around 2007, and not yet finished. When the developers, Allied London Properties, encountered choppy financial waters, the scheme was reputedly bailed out by the city council. The two prominent blocks here were designed by Foster & Partners no less. They're the best of a largely mediocre job (perhaps because they seem to hark back a few decades), although to be fair the creation of a public space is not to be sniffed at.
