Hulme's Bridge Ferry
The abandoned ferry keepers house at the side of Hulme's Bridge Ferry, in Flixton, Greater Manchester. Once the home of a gentleman who ferried people across the Manchester Ship Canal in a small rowing boat for a small fee. The current owners of the canal, Peel Holdings, have closed the ferry, some say illegally, as it's a public right of way, and have let the house fall into disuse.

Manchester Ship Canal, Hulme Bridge Ferry
The ferry jetty on the south bank of the Manchester Ship Canal. The Hulmes Bridge free ferry was established in 1885 by an act of parliament making the Manchester Ship Canal owners responsible for providing a free ferry to replace a low lying bridge that had to be demolished to allow access for tall ships up the canal. Although the ferry was closed in 2009, and the ferryman’s house left to fall into disrepair (see Image]) the service was reinstated in 2011 (http://www.urmston.net/forum/forum_detail.asp?ForumTitle=Ship%20Canal%20Ferry - "Urmston net") and runs between April and November.

Manchester Ship Canal, Hulmes Bridge Ferry
The two jetties (now securely fenced off) are the remains of a ferry which used to cross the Manchester Ship Canal at this point. The ferry replaced a bridge which crossed the River Irwell here until it was incorporated into the canal. It appears that the ferry hasn't operated since 2009.
