Older residents of Manchester, seeing the present repaving bonanza occasioned by extensions to the Metrolink tram system, would be right to think they had experienced it all before: not once but twice. Here, in 1984, in the environs of St Ann's Square, we see the Council's first attempt at improvements: to be followed, a decade later, by a further upgrade of the whole area. Boer War Memorial
The grade II listed https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1254462 memorial on the corner of St Ann's Square and Exchange Street to the South African War was built in 1907 by Hamor Thorneycroft. The Boer War Memorial, St Ann's Square
The Boer War Memorial was erected in 1907 near the Market Street end of St Ann's Square to commemorate those who were killed in the South African wars between 1899 and 1902. The bronze sculpture on the square base depicts a bare-headed British rifleman protecting a wounded comrade.
It is Grade II-listed (Historic England List Entry Number: 1254462 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1254462 ).
