M60 Junction 18, Simister Island
Looking from the bridge at Simister Lane. The road to the left is the exit slip road, from the anticlockwise M60 eastern section, to the Simister Island junction where traffic will go left (to the anti-clockwise M60 western section) or round the island to the right, to join the eastbound M62 towards Yorkshire. The road ahead, passing under the interchange is the M66 (which is the continuation of the M60 eastern section).

Southern approach to Simister Island
Simister Island is the junction of the M60, M62, and M66 north of Manchester. The M60 approaches from the west and the south, meaning that to remain on the M60 one must use slip roads and the roundabout. Here, the slip road is used to access the M60 anticlockwise(left lane) and the M62 eastbound via the roundabout (centre and right); the lanes on the right provide direct access from the M60 anticlockwise to the M66 northbound. Meanwhile, at right angles, direct access between the M60 and M62 crosses the junction at the highest level.

Traffic Flow Monitor over the M60 at Simister
Simister Island is a very busy motorway junction. It is junction 18 of the M60 (Manchester Outer Ring Road) and M62 (Main east-west link from Liverpool to Hull) and junction 4 of the M66. In "normal times" thousands of vehicles use this motorway intersection each day and it is a cause of much traffic congestion at peak commuter times. This box is mounted immediately in front of the bridge at Simister Lane. The white label states that: "This Unit is a Traffic Flow Monitor It provides road users with accurate real-time traffic information which helps reduce congestion. This is NOT a Camera This is NOT a Speed Trap This is NOT a Tax Disc Reader For further information please contact Traffic Information Services"

Famous from traffic bulletins. The M66 continues straight on to the right. To the left you can either continue round the M60 or take the M62 towards Leeds.
