Former Athenaeum, Princess Street, Manchester
"As Manchester's first palazzo, it can claim to be the inspiration for a genre which Manchester was to make her own as the model for commercial warehouses", wrote Pevsner. By Charles Barry, 1836-37, and redolent of his London clubs. Windows with heavy pediments and a heavy cornice. The proportions have been spoiled by the roof added in 1873. Grade II* listed. It is now an annex to the adjoining City Art Gallery (Image]).

Exhibition space
This is the upper floor of the former Atheneum, now the extension of the Manchester Art Gallery. This was once a ballroom. The exhibition is of the paraphernalia associated with beverage drinking, mostly tea but with hints of coffee and alcohol.

Inside and Outside
The rear wall of the original Manchester Institute, now half of the Art Gallery, is partly enclosed within the glass atrium linking it to the Atheneum, and partly still an exterior wall. Inside Manchester Art Gallery
Inside Image Manchester Art Gallery, formerly known as Manchester City Art Gallery, is on Mosley Street.
