"As Manchester's first palazzo, it can claim to be the inspiration for a genre which Manchester was to make her own as the model for commercial warehouses", wrote Pevsner. By Charles Barry, 1836-37, and redolent of his London clubs. Windows with heavy pediments and a heavy cornice. The proportions have been spoiled by the roof added in 1873. Grade II* listed. It is now an annex to the adjoining City Art Gallery (Image]).
