Time Ball Buildings, Briggate, Leeds
A real idiosyncrasy, the creation of watchmaker, John Dyson, in 1876 (though behind his elaborate stucco are two C17th houses). The listing observes that the, "gilded time ball mechanism was linked to Greenwich and dropped at exactly 1pm each day; this feature, together with the window mechanism, makes Dyson's a rare survival of elaborate Victorian/Edwardian shop innovation and design." Grade II* listed. The ground floor is now an Indian restaurant. It was still Dyson's in the late 1990s. See here for a photo taken in 1979 http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=200514_72710818 Thanks to fellow Geographer, Rich Tea, for this information.

Time Ball Buildings, Briggate
The building dates from the early 19th century, the elaborate frontage being added when watchmaker John Dyson took over the building in c.1872. The building takes its name from the ball above the large clock, which was linked to Greenwich by telegraph and dropped at precisely 1 o'clock p.m., enabling precise time to be established in the city. One item is missing in this view, the figure of Father Time who should be standing on top of the left hand clock http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2718110 . Hopefully he was away for repair rather than having disappeared altogether. The building is Listed Grade II*.

Time Ball Buildings
Once Dysons importers of French clocks and watchmakers. Built in 1865, this building is grand. More recently it was a restaurant but during my last visit to Leeds in 2009 I noticed that it had fallen victim to the Recession.
