Drury Lane, Lincoln
Formerly known as the West Side Entrance, this Grade II-listed late C11-13th archway is attached to the west gable of "Castle Villa" (No.14, Drury Lane) that was built in c1870. The medieval fragments are said to have come from the Priory of St Catherine. The Gilbertine Priory of St. Catherine, outside Lincoln, was founded by Robert de Chesney, Bishop of Lincoln, probably soon after the confirmation of the order of Sempringham by Eugenius III in 1148. The outline of Lincoln Castle can be seen to the rear.

Garden gate, Castle Villa, Drury Lane, Lincoln
Arched gateway built of medieval fragments by Thomas Martin in 1877. Land agent for 14 Drury Lane he is said to have built it with stone from the Priory of St Catherine. Martin was a developer of land centred on Derby Street in 1876 and Edmund Venables (1819-1895) recorded discoveries made by him while laying either Colegrave Street or Derby Street. (I assume this is the Thomas Martin who was Mayor of Lincoln 1887-8).

Post-Edwardian chic
I think this house is mainly informed by the arts-and-crafts movement. It is certainly singular, and I quite like the look.

Along Drury Lane
The name possibly comes from the Middle English 'druerie', meaning lover or affection; but is also said to be the surname of one of the Conquerer's captains in 1066. However, Lincoln's first theatre was established at the end of this road in 1744, some 80 years after the playhouse in London in that town's Drury Lane, so this may just be an affectionate pun or a bit of aggrandisement.
