Aykroyd &Son's Ffatri Berwyn
Aykroyd & Son is a clothing manufacturing company set up in Lancashire in 1918, but whose main manufacturing base has for some decades been concentrated in Bala, first at the old militia barracks in the High Street and lately in a brand new purpose built factory on the Bala Enterprise Estate. The company has been a major employer in the Bala area, especially of female labour. Recently, like other sections of the British textile and clothing industry, it has faced severe competition from cheap imports from China and Eastern Europe which led to cut backs in its workforce.

Maes-yr-hedydd from the Bala by-pass
Until the late 20th century, the gentleman's residence of Maes yr Hedydd (lark's field) and its adjoining farmhouse, lay well outside the boundaries of the town of Bala. Since then it has been almost surrounded by new housing and road developments.
