Leicester, LE3 - Braunstone Hall
The front entrance of Braunstone Hall. A certain Clement Winstanley commissioned it in 1775 and it was extended in 1911. The whole estate (168 acres comprising lakes, woodland and meadows) was compulsorily purchased by Leicester City Council in 1925 for the construction of a nearby housing estate and for recreational purposes, for the sum of £116,500. The park was opened to the public in the early 1930s. In 1932, following refurbishment, Braunstone Hall was opened as a "Senior School". However, as families moved into the new housing estate the need for a Junior School proved more urgent. Thus Braunstone Hall Junior School was opened in 1933, an establishment that served the local community until it was closed in 1996.

Braunstone Hall, Braunstone Park, Leicester
A handsome house built in 1776 by William Oldham for Clement Winstanley. The motif of the recessed central bay is the same as
Image], although Oldham is not known to have designed the latter. Good Doric doorcase (
Image]). Grade II listed.
Having been a school from the 1930s until the 1990s, the house was then disused for at least twenty years. Since this photo it has been renovated, converted into a hotel/restaurant/event venue and renamed Winstanley House (
Image]).
The grounds form a public park.
