The 'New' Leven Cut
The excavation of the 32 foot-wide New Cut began on 1st July 1828 and entailed the removal of 318,000 cubic yards of soil. It was to follow a straight line travelling 5,516 yards.

The Leven Cut
Looking upstream in the direction of the sluice house. An Act of Parliament in 1827 allowed the digging of the four-mile Cut from Findatie where the River Leven flows from the loch. Resultantly, industries downstream received a more reliable flow of water and extra land was freed-up for agricultural use.

The 'New' Leven Cut
Work on the 32 foot-wide cut began on 1st July 1828 and the first release of water from Loch Leven took place on 25th December 1831. The project was supposed to take no longer than one year - some things never change.....
