. . . “The old Parish Church at Carnock was repaired in 1602, but is now in ruins, being roofless and overgrown with ivy. It was a small building, with only 240 sittings.”

Carnock Church Ruin ? South Side and Manse
The white walled building in the background is The Manse.
The ornate stone detail on the viewers left and in the vertical centre, can be seen in close in my other photograph, Carnock Church Ruin – Stonework Detail.

Carnock Church Ruin ? South East Corner
Although this church has been a Ruin for a long time, the pointing of the stonework is in very good condition. I wonder if it is being maintained as a ‘Ruin’.

Carnock Church Ruin ? Stonework Detail
This detail can be seen, in context, on the south side of the building in another of my photographs, called Carnock Church Ruin – South Side
Although the church was apparently repaired in 1602, this detail has the number 1683 which at first glance seems to be a year date, but there are other markings and Roman numerals and an illustration that looks like the sun.

The Old Inn at Carnock
If you are researching in this area then a visit to The Old Inn will be very rewarding. The walls, especially the dining room, are covered with fascinating old photographs. One of the photographs shows a line of rambling cottage dwellings that at some point were joined together to produce the Old Inn that you see in the photograph above.
If you are lucky, you may find an older member of staff with lots of local knowledge. She moved to Carnock when she was a child.
Make sure to see the crudely carved date on the lintel of one of the back doors — I think it was mid 1800’s.
If you research and find dates for this pub, be aware that the date may be when the cottages were built or may be when they were converted to a pub. I have not done such research.
Parking your car is best done in one of the side streets.
