This area appears to be at least as much Hook as Chessington, so why all the expense over the years incurred by a much longer name? Perhaps because there was another Hook on the Southern Railway in Hampshire.

Old Milestone by the A243, Hook Road, Chessington Parish
Carved stone post by the A243, in parish of CHESSINGTON (KINGSTON UPON THAMES District), a mile North of Chessington World of Adventure, in driveway next to pavement by garden wall, on West side of road. Chessington peak stone, erected by the Kingston & Leatherhead turnpike trust in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- : (M)ILES / KINGSTON / 3 MILES : : (LEATHERHEAD) / 5 MILES / DORKING / 10 MILES : Milestone Society National ID: SY_KTLH03.

Chessington North railway station, Greater London
Opened in 1939 by the Southern Railway on the line that was intended to run from London Waterloo via Wimbledon through to Leatherhead, but the war intervened and the extension beyond Chessington South was never built. View south west towards Chessington South.
