Approaching Millport from the north
Millport is actually visible in this picture, just as it is to anybody who travels from the ferry slip on the road over the central part of the island. This particular day's subdued October sun leaves it very indistinct, however.

Millport gas Works
Coal heap to the left - the raw material for making coal (town's) gas. Two purifiers to remove sulphur by passing gas through iron oxide. A very smelly process. The very last traditional gas works in the UK.

Millport Gas Works
The last coal gas works in the UK. Used hand fired horizontal retorts to the end. Closed 1981. Condenser to the left, Livesey washer to the right. The building contained the exhausters, including a steam engine driven Beales exhauster. Real living history. Now demolished.

Millport Gasworks - retorts
Millport on Great Cumbrae Island was the last traditional 'town gas' gasworks in the UK and was still at work when I took this photograph of the two 'benches' of 6 horizontal retorts. The circular door at the bottom of the benches is for the fire that heats the retorts and I saw this being stoked with hot coke from one of the discharged retorts. I should have photographed the process of charging and discharging but in those days I was very miserly with film of 'non-steam' subjects. The retort house was very gloomy and even if I had a flash I wouldn't have been allowed to use it. This has all now gone.

Millport Gasworks, Great Cumbrae Island
Steam driven exhauster. This is the back up exhauster. The working exhauster was electrically driven with an internal combustion engine back up. The gas works was still in full use when I saw it in 1979. The steam engine is by Bryan Donkin of Chesterfield with a c6" x 5" slide valve cylinder and two 20.5" flywheels. It is direct coupled to a Beale's sliding vane type exhauster and controlled by a gas pressure governor (the vertical drum on the right). I was so privileged to see this throwback to an earlier era.
