High Street, Maybole
Maybole has the misfortune of being one of those now rare towns on a busy trunk road without a bypass. The photograph is misleading, it can take some time to get from one side to the other.

The Site Of Maybole Town Cross
The small iron cross in the road marks the position of the old Town Cross. Even though the High Street was much wider than it is nowadays, the Cross was removed in 1773 because it was obstructing the traffic. (Source: "Maybole - Carrick's Capital", by James T Gray). The A77 road goes along Maybole High Street and the high volume of traffic, much of it heavy lorries for the Irish ferries on Loch Ryan, has produced repeated calls for a town by-pass.

Traffic congestion in Maybole
Looking down Maybole High Street at the junction with John Knox Street showing traffic jammed up in both directions on the A77. Lorries are now so big that they often have to use the pavements to pass each other here. The Eurocontinental lorry, which claims to keep the food industry on the move, was stuck for 16 minutes while traffic crept past and gave way to a fire engine and an ambulance attending an incident. Thankfully, work has started on the long-awaited by-pass.

Maybole High Street after the by-pass opened
We always knew that the new by-pass would make a big difference to the town centre but the result has exceeded expectations, especially for pedestrians. This is what High Street could look like before – Image was taken in August 2019 and Image in neighbouring Whitehall in September 2006. The next stage will be town centre regeneration.
