The Deanery, The Great Churchyard, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

This Victorian postbox is set into the wall of the Deanery. It has lost its standard information plate but the last collection times, 4:45pm on weekdays and 11:30am on Saturdays, have been listed in rather homemade fashion. The tower of the cathedral can be seen in the distance.

Formerly known as "The Clopton Asylum" this building was originally Almshouses, built c.1744 under the will of Dr Poley Clopton (d.1730). From c.1890 it became the Vicarage of St James' Church It is now divided between The Provost's House and No.4 Churchyard, the latter known as "Clopton Cottage". This crest is below the pediment of the Deanery at Bury St Edmunds. The motto is 'Doresenavant Ovblier ne doy'

Snow from yesterday or the day before still partly covers the ruins as the temperature has remained around freezing or below since then.

This property between the abbey ruins and the Great Churchyard has had a number of uses as well as a number of names. Built in red brick with stone dressings, in 1736 as Clopton’s Hospital - almshouses which catered to ‘twelve poor people’, the name changed to Clopton’s Asylum in 1825. It became the vicarage for the church of St James in 1900. When listed by English Heritage it was the Provost's House and Clopton Cottage. An article in Suffolk News in August 2018 stated that an application has been submitted to subdivide The Deanery to create one two-bedroom house and a six-bedroom Deanery, where the new Dean, will stay. In 1953 the Borough bought the Gardens and managed the area around the abbey ruins, thus reuniting the two main parts of the Abbey Precinct - the Abbey Gardens and the Great Churchyard.
