Maplin Store on Green Lane
Usually you would find a Maplin store on either a high street or out-of-town retail park, but the Ilford store is located on a residential main road, where there is a parade of shops just a few hundred yards up the road in the photo. The store can be found on the junction of A1083 Green Lane and South Park Drive, which is out of shot behind and to the right of the photographer. View taken looking south-south east from Green Lane.

Home and away players challenge in the air for a free kick that has been whipped into the box. The Ilford FC players are wearing their home kit of blue and white hooped shirts with blue shorts, whilst Wingate & Finchley wear their all yellow away strip.

Blossom in South Park
South Park was created following Ilford Council's purchase of 32 acres of the Loxford Hall Estate in 1899. The park opened in 1902. It contains a large lake with several islands, formed by diverting water from Loxford Water, which is part of Seven Kings Brook. The site of the bandstand remains marked by hedging and a tarmac path skirts the perimeter of the park. In 1923 the Broadway A clock tower was erected in the park, but destroyed by a bomb in 1944. See http://www.londongardensonline.org.uk/gardens-online-record.asp?ID=RED036 for a fuller description. In this view near the north of the park, South Park Crescent is to the left and South Park Drive is ahead.

Cricklefield Stadium
Home of Ilford FC as well as Ilford Athletic club, the stadium comprises a football pitch surrounded by a running track and other athletics facilities. The stadium was built in 1923 and can hold 3500 people, a capacity that was barely stretched on the day this photo was taken - only 49 attended the match of which many were visiting supporters of Wingate & Finchley FC. The Stadium has seen better days, being used for preliminary football matches in the 1948 Olympics. A more recent addition is the well equipped clubhouse on the right of the photo which on the day the photo was taken was playing host to an evangelical church meeting as well as providing bar and snack facilities for visiting football supporters. In the foreground, on the curve of the running track, is the watersplash used in Steeplechasing events. Behind, the Ilford goalkeeper warms up with his coach.
