This colourful building is at the junction of Connaught Lane, stretching away to the left, and Connaught Road in the foreground. Connaught Lane is a thoroughfare that runs parallel to the High Road and St Mary's Avenue and between them.

Easily the most elegant building on this whole stretch of road! If you look closely, you can see it's strung with blue LED lights, which I think it is all year round. Looking south-southeast.

Sikh temple on High Road, Ilford.

The High Road offers a wide range of places of worship - Church of England, Roman Catholic, Baptist, Spiritualist, Pentecostal and Evangelical all within a kilometre. The 1946 OS map shows this as a Unitarian church, so it has changed denomination at some time since then. It was built in 1909.

Ilford Burial Board, established in 1880, laid out Buckingham Road Cemetery as an extension of the burial ground of St Mary the Virgin Great Ilford and initially the cemetery was known as Great Ilford Cemetery. It had its own chapel. The first burial took place on 4th September 1881. In the background is St Mary the Virgin Church, Great Ilford. St Mary the Virgin is the old parish church of Ilford. It was built between 1829 and 1831. The chancel dates from 1920. The building of a new parish church at Ilford was under discussion in 1823 although the division of the parish of Barking was first proposed in 1650. Due to strong opposition it did not get built until 1830 when the new ecclesiastical parish of Great Ilford was created. The parish churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, Great Ilford is now closed to new burials, but has a collection of early century headstones. In 1863 the Vicar's wish to extend the churchyard was opposed by some parishioners. Today it adjoins Buckingham Road Cemetery.

This memorial near the entrance commemorates Sir Peter Griggs, the 1st MP for Ilford, who died in 1920, his monument surmounted by an angel. The chapel shown on the map near this spot has gone. The cemetery is marked off from St Mary's churchyard which shares the same site by a line of white posts to the south of the church. The largest monument here topped by an angel is that dedicated to Sir Peter Griggs who was the first MP for Ilford. He died in 1920.
