Steam at Ripple Lane open day, 1987
Ripple Lane locomotive depot had an open day on the Saturday after the great storm of the Thursday night 15/16 October 1987. Several exhibits and events could not feature as they were cut off by blocked lines, but this steam locomotive, 80080, made it, as well as 48151. It was giving rides the length of Ripple Lane yard. Despite travel difficulties a large number of people attended, shuttled in by a diesel service from Barking station. 80080 spent its early years up to 1962 on the London, Tilbury & Southend line, so it knew its way around! The headboard has 'Blue Peter Return to Steam', the exact significance of this in this context is unknown. The locomotive depot and most of the yard is now gone.

A glimpse of earlier days at Ripple Lane, 1987
At the depot open day one of two steam engines attending is glimpsed through the depot oil storage tanks. 8F 2-8-0 48151 was of a class often seen at Ripple Lane in steam days, but not actually based on the LTS system. The tanks look incredibly clean and must have been repainted for the open day. The tank on the left is from an old rail tank car. When in service, the tank was held down by two steel straps as well as the cables. The grooves where these were are evident, caused by fretting or possibly corrosion under the straps.
