Cottingham Road, Kingston upon Hull
The complex formerly known as Newland Homes, designed by W.H. Bingley, was built 1895-1902 as the Port of Hull Society's Orphan Homes. Twelve grey brick houses, named after benefactors, are sited around a large open green with a sanatorium and St Nicholas Primary School at the northern end. The Port of Hull Society changed its name to the Sailors' Children's Society in 1950. In 2004 the Trustees took the decision to close the Children's Services and sell the Newland Estate. Agreement was reached with the City Council in 2006 to lease St Nicholas School buildings and some surrounding land to the Council. Captain Allison Home is the former sanatorium given by Joseph Rank, 1898. Grade II Listed Building http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-387522-newland-homes-captain-allison-house-

Newland, Hull HU5
A primary school in the centre of the former Newland Homes estate; an estate that is off Cottingham Road (the B1233). The estate boasts 13 listed buildings, including this school, most of which were used as orphanages for the children of deceased and disabled British seafarers, c.1896. However, as more and more children came to be cared for in foster homes the orphanages became redundant, with the last child leaving residential care in November 2004. The Sailors' Families' Society however, still provides a lifeline for specific children and their families. Ordinary families and individuals appear to be using the houses now and in addition, although the school closed in 2006, it now appears to be being used again by local children.
