A primary school in the centre of the former Newland Homes estate; an estate that is off Cottingham Road (the B1233). The estate boasts 13 listed buildings, including this school, most of which were used as orphanages for the children of deceased and disabled British seafarers, c.1896. However, as more and more children came to be cared for in foster homes the orphanages became redundant, with the last child leaving residential care in November 2004. The Sailors' Families' Society however, still provides a lifeline for specific children and their families. Ordinary families and individuals appear to be using the houses now and in addition, although the school closed in 2006, it now appears to be being used again by local children.
