In 1860 the Beverley Poor Law Union commissioned a new workhouse, designed by John & William Atkinson of York. The original entrance block, later the Master's Cottage, was built in 1861. In 1930 the workhouse became The Institution and was taken over by the East Riding Council. In 1939 the buildings became Westwood General Hospital, to serve the town of Beverley. In 2012 the hospital site became redundant. In 2014 planning permission was granted to the P.J. Livesey Group to redevelop the site for private housing, to be known as Westwood Park. In Phase I the Cottage has been developed as an individually designed home.
