The triangular sign indicates bends ahead in a Roman road, proverbially straight. The likely explanation here is that the course of the road has been changed within the last century and a half, to follow the best route across railway lines. A railway bridge is around the corner.

Traffic light controlled bridge, Roman Road, Hereford
The bridge carries Roman Road (A4103) above railway lines located north of Hereford station and about 800 metres SW of Shelwick Junction.
An alternating one-way flow of traffic across the narrow bridge is controlled by traffic lights. There is room for only a narrow pavement for walkers, but even that is an improvement on the pavementless approach. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2234014

Hereford : Roman Road climbs towards railway bridge
The view west along Roman Road (A4103) as it ascends towards the railway bridge above tracks about 800 metres SW of Shelwick Junction. It is not a pleasant route for walkers : there are no pavements.
