Castle Wharf, Berkhamsted
Bridgewater Boats ceased trading from this site about six years ago; since then these premises at Castle Wharf have lain derelict. A highly controversial proposal to redevelop the site for housing was refused planning permission.

Parglena at Berkhamsted
Motor barge Parglena is leaving Berkhamsted middle lock. This is a 5/7ths replica of one of the Duker barges, that were built in the early 1950s. Even so, its size compared with a typical modern cruising narrowboat can be seen. There are interesting stories here http://www.cutweb.org.uk/members/parglena.html and here http://lock13.co.uk/boats/parglena.htm

Totem pole
This totem pole was preserved thank goodness when the woodyard in which it stood was razed and replaced with a block of flats. This is a view from the canal towpath. Berkhamsted railway station platform roofs are visible behind.

Castle Wharf in 1997
A holiday snap from a cruise we took back in the 90s. It shows the house and a bit of the boatyard premises from when it was trading as Bridgewater Boats. This predates the dereliction shown in this 2010 shot Image with the place in a very sad state. The house at least seems to have been rescued as seen here Image

Berkhamsted middle lock 54
The middle lock of three through the town. As we arrived, motor barge Parglena was preparing to leave. This is a 5/7ths replica of one of the Duker barges, that were built in the early 1950s. As there were six of them, all beginning Par and having the next letter a, b, c etc, the owners of this boat came up with Pargxxxxx to be the seventh in the series. There are interesting stories here http://www.cutweb.org.uk/members/parglena.html and here http://lock13.co.uk/boats/parglena.htm
