Looking along the Wendover Arm to Bucklandwharf
A view along a very straight section of the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union canal as it approaches Bucklandwharf. Although this section is in water, it is very shallow and is not connected to the eastern end of the Arm. Plans are afoot to change this state of affairs however (see shared description below):

Bucklandwharf
The settlement of Bucklandwharf is at the eastern end of the village of Aston Clinton. The dyke between the fields and the houses is the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union canal. This section is partly in water but is disconnected from the rest of the canal system so is not navigable, though restoration work is afoot on this arm. The prominent white building was a pub, The New Inn, up to about 20 years ago, but is now home to a company called Homesitters. Pitstone Hill rises in the background.

The Old New Inn
You can take down the signs and paint all the walls. It still looks like a pub. This was the old canalside New Inn, now used by a company called Homesitters.

Accommodation bridge at Bucklandwharf
This little bridge allows access from Buckland Road to a small row of houses on the eastern side of the canal at Bucklandwharf. The canal is the Wendover arm of the Grand Union Canal and has been closed to canal traffic since 1897, though there are plans to re-open it. If they do, this bridge (which post-dates the closure) will have either to be raised, or else replaced by a swing- or lift-bridge. This bridge is numbered 5B as it is the second of two bridges which have been inserted between Bridge 5 Image] and Bridge 6 just beyond this bridge at Bucklandwharf which carries the Roman Akeman Street - the former A41, now declassified - over the canal. The other bridge to have been inserted is the more recent Image] which is Bridge 5A, an appellation which would formerly have been given to this accommodation bridge.

Wendover Arm: Bridge No 6 and the Canal-side Footpath
Because the water level will rise when the connection between Little Tring and Drayton Beauchamp is completed, this bridge will be too low to allow canal barges through. As the road over the bridge is a busy main road this will require a significant amount of work. See Image
