John L Brierley's large and fine mill with an intact chimney. There was a good pusher compounded beam engine here but it went before my time. The lifting bridge is interesting and was in use even then to allow boats up Ramsden's Canal to .

Mills of John L Brierley, Turnbridge
The mills of John L Brierley and once home to a magnificent pusher compounded beam engine. The Turnbridge area was also home to Schofield & Taylor - engineers who made stationary steam engines for the local textile mills. The tall beam engine house is seen behind the lifting bridge near the base of the chimney. The lifting bridge is over the Huddersfield Broad Canal (or Ramsden's Canal).

Dockyard Sawmill and Turnbridge Mill
Magnet Southerns is in the yard that was formerly owned by Jarratt, Pyrah and Armitage. This site is now a supermarket but back in 1976 it had a working stationary steam engine. I saw this run just once, its last time, on a Monday afternoon on the way home from school. Lots of people came in from the mill as it coasted down for the very last time and it was an emotional introduction to working steam. The big mill in the background is Turnbridge Mills, owned by John L Brierley.

Quay Street Bridge, Huddersfield
Quay Street Bridge crossing the Huddersfield Broad Canal close to Huddersfield town centre. The footbridge is fixed, as it is high enough for barges to pass underneath. The road bridge behind it, however, is raised if required to enable barges to pass. In the distance, the Victoria Tower can be seen atop Castle Hill.
