The 1918 OS map shows a pub on this site, and the present tap room displays drawings from 1930 for 'alterations to the Sportsmans Inn' by architects Hoyle and Smith, for the brewers Seth Senior and Sons. It was altered again by Hammonds Brewery in about 1950, and restored but not substantially altered in 2009, which accounts for its entry in CAMRA's regional heritage list. It was statutorily listed Grade II quite recently (2019; entry 1464388) for that reason and 'as a good representative surviving example of a street corner ‘local’ [of] the inter-war period'. The signage has changed since my previous visit shortly before listing Image
