The former Priestroyd Mills, Huddersfield
This magnificent building with a datestone of 1869 was actually part of Priestroyd Ironworks and provided machine parts for the mills rather than itself being a woollen mill. It lost the top of its hotel de ville tower in a fire in the 1970s but it has now been restored to its former glory. When I was growing up in Huddersfield in the 1970s every building was black due to the air pollution. It is now hard to appreciate this when most buildings have been cleaned. This building is most probably now associated with the university.

One-way section of Firth Street , Huddersfield
This is the western end of the street. The gates of the Priest Royd Iron Works have been restored as the entrance to a car park. They carry the date 1836. The Works was converted to a textile mill later in the 19C, and the imposing five-storey buildings must date from that period.

Queen Street South, Huddersfield
This captures the industrial spirit of Huddersfield. The range with water tower and chimney is Fairfield Mills and is still a working woollen mill. In the background are the tall engineering workshops of Thomas Broadbent & Sons. That company is still in business also and started in 1864. Sneaking underneath the more modern rectangular block just beyond the blue railings is the restored Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
