Huddersfield, HD1 (Centre)
A section of Westgate Street looking towards the junction with John William Street. On the left is the ornate wrought iron and glass entrance to the Byram Arcade, currently painted in sage green. Inside a collection of independent and specialist retail shops is to be found on three levels, in a setting largely unchanged since the 19th century. The complex is Victorian and was built by W.H.Crossland. It is named after the ancestral home of the Ramsden family near Pontefract. The Ramsdens were the owners of a large proportion of Huddersfield.

Westgate House, Huddersfield
This prefabricated shop dates from 1923. The frontage has a steel frame, bronze cladding and plenty of glass. In the 1920s, this would have been ultra-modern, and it remains an intriguing and attractive building today. It is currently occupied by the shop Bronx, which sells designer clothes for men.

Who let the snowdog off the lead?
There was supposed to be a 'snowdog' on this plinth in the marketplace entitled 'Together we are one', but it had vanished.

Huddersfield Centre
This is the junction of John William Street and Kirkgate. The architecture of the McDonald's building shows that it was once Burton's the tailors.
