The Open Market
Also known as the Monday market, this fine cast iron building signals the union of architecture and engineering. Erected 1887-9, the building was designed by the Borough Surveyor Richard Dugdale and was originally a wholesale market for fruit and vegetables. Now a retail Market, the general market is on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, whilst a second hand market occurs on Tuesdays. It is a Grade II listed building (English Heritage Building ID: 339632 http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-339632-wholesale-market-for-fruit-and-vegetable British Listed Buildings).

Former Empire cinema, John William Street
This looks like a cinema building, is identified by two other contributors as such, and is shown as a 'picture house' on the 1932 map. The website cinematreasures.org says it opened on 8th March 1915, closed as a commercial cinema in 1971 but two smaller screens are still used by a private cinema club. The remainder of the building was used at one time as a discount store Image but now appears to be used for selling antiques. Surprisingly the Grade II listing text (entry 1288963) says nothing about this being a cinema.
