Road Direction Sign, Brimpsfield
Fingerpost opposite the "Old Post Office" at the Southern end of the village. The finger is modern but the post has the old-fashioned castellated sleeves and octagonal finial. The directions include an unusual "Bus Route". Inscription: Bus Route To / Caudle Green Milestone Society National ID: GL_SO9312

Amid Cotswold fields and lanes - Brimpsfield, Gloucestershire
A view, taken on the northern edge of the village on the road from Birdlip, of a corner of the village of Brimpsfield which lies to the south-west of the A417 road from Cirencester to Gloucester. The 12th century parish church of St Michael was built by a member of the Giffard family. The family were given Brimpsfield by William the Conqueror and there was a castle hereabouts until its demolition in 1322 after a family member joined in a rebellion against Edward II and was subsequently beheaded/hanged at Gloucester. The village was given a market at some time before 1400, but with the isolated position of the village and poor communications, it was not a success. Many generations must have passed along these lanes through the centuries, both travellers across Cotswold and local residents about their daily business. Brime's field? - Brimpsfield, Gloucestershire
In William the Conqueror's actually incomplete survey of England, Domesday Book, the village of Brimpsfield appears as Brimesfelde. Brimes field? If so, could this be it? The parish church of St Michael stands apart from the present day village and adjoins the site of the Giffard family's now-vanished castle. The 12th century church was built by a member of the Giffard family and the castle was destroyed in 1322 after a family member perhaps ill-advisedly took part in a rebellion against King Edward II. The said family member met his end being executed in Gloucester. Time taken 5.01 pm BST (British Summer Time).

Cotswold bus stop - Brimpsfield, Gloucestershire
Here in this Gloucestershire village of Brimpsfield, only just visible in this photo, is the village bus stop. No bus shelter though, so I suppose failing an umbrella, would-be passengers have to take shelter in the telephone box. The village is not what anyone might call a transport hub - three or four buses daily Monday to Friday and three in each direction on a Saturday. There seems to be considerable talk about the general health and welfare of the population, but I hear recently that our Government is considering abandoning the bus pass scheme because of the cost of providing it. Actions speak louder than a whole library of fine words - I hope the scheme will continue as many people would be affected by its being stopped. Fewer passengers on bus services too? The real, unquantifiable, cost might be enormous. I might be spoilt here - buses past the door every few minutes from very early morning till midnight - but I still miss my 30 years in Gloucestershire and the many friends I had there. Time photo taken 5.00 pm BST (British Summer Time).
