Mounting block, Kings Arms
These steps were an important feature in the days when horses were the common mode of transport. The ladies with their long skirts would have had great difficulty in mounting their horses (even side-saddle) without the aid of these steps.

Sign for the Kings Arms
The arms shown on the signs vary according to the king the artist had in mind. The sign would not have been used during the Commonwealth, but it has been a proud declaration of loyalty since the Restoration. For a wider view of the building Image
