The Great Northern Railway opened its line between Maiden Lane and Peterborough on 7th August 1850 on which date Barnet station opened. On 1st May 1884, the station was renamed New Barnet. This is the up slow line. Trains go from here to Moorgate. The fast lines are to the left, beyond railings. As is the case with many stations now, where it is feasible, the fast lines are protected by railings.

A view of the rail-side footbridge as it was in 1976. Passengers entered the station via a footbridge on the other side of the ticket hall. They then accessed this footbridge connecting the platforms via the doorways on the right. This section of footbridge is no longer in use having been removed when the station was rebuilt and the old ticket hall demolished - just the steel flooring below the wooden planks remains in situ as it forms a structural part of the bridge over the tracks. The station buildings, signs and lights look decidedly care worn in this view from 1976. The booking hall which spanned the fast lines was demolished leaving only its steel floor area in place as this formed part of the bridge structure. The electrification of the Kings Cross suburban services had been underway since 1973 and the wires are up but the juice hadn't been turned on yet - it was finally completed in 1978. A large Great Northern Railway goods shed that had clearly been out of use for a long time when this photo was taken in 1976. Indeed, it has even found itself on the wrong side of the fence! Much of the local freight on the old Great Northern lines died out in the mid 1960's. It was probably demolished in the late 1980's - further investigation required on the date.
