King George V Playing Fields, Whitburn
The playing fields were opened in 1955 by Queen Elizabeth II, in a memorial to King George V. There are 471 other playing fields that are part of the memorial. There was a cinder running track on the lower level with a football pitch in the middle, but is now one large piece or grass. The cinder track was never properly maintained and due to the fact it was below the water table, was very muddy, and still is when the local youth football teams use the pitches. The upper level has two football pitches and is also used for the galaday sports and marching arena during the fourth Saturday of June. Odd Town Sign at Whitburn's Northern Approach
Before the M8 arrived in the 1960s, the A8 was the main traffic route between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The section of it than ran just North of Whitburn must have been purpose-built though, as it doesn't follow the route of any older roads, and was built at some point between 1914 and 1939. Presumably it roughly followed an already established route though, as the sign depicts a coach and horses, which you would think means that it was a scene synonymous with Whitburn for more than a few years before motorised transport took over. Being roughly halfway between the two cities there were probably a number of coach houses and inns in Whitburn in times gone by.

Former Whitburn Ballie Public Institute
Former Whitburn Baillie Public Institute in the snow with Lodge Polkemmet No. 927 shown on the right. The lodge was originally a single storey building but the walls were extended upwards in the 1920s and the original roof was reused.
The Master of the lodge when the new temple was opened was Sir Adrian Baillie 6th Baronet of Polkemmet. http://www.lodgepolkemmet.co.uk/History1.html
